webcomics, entertainers, and sad news webcomic artists are in a tough spot, you know. most of them are either relying on a day job to keep a roof over their head, and still trying to produce a comic on a quasi regular basis...... or else they made the leap to full time self employed, and depend on their READERS to keep them fed and a roof over their heads.
when something goes wrong it can be very tough.
recently on Girl Genius http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php (by Phil and Kaja Foglio, coloring by Cheyenne Wright) Kaja had another hospital bill, and Cheyenne was seriously injured and had a even larger hospital bill (PS you can still donate to the help pay the bill fund, the click button is on their comic page.)
more recently Evan Nichols, of "Ask Dr Eldritch" http://www.askdreldritch.com/latest.html had to deal with a tragic loss in his family. his sister and her husband lost their infant child. in addition to this there was a previously scheduled wedding in the family.
there is not much we can do to soften the blows of all this, but i remind you of things you CAN do for your favorite web comic authors (and others)... two free, one costs money.
FREE: you can vote. if they have a voting link up on Top Web Comics (both of the above do, some don't)or some other vote thing like best filk of the year or what not... you can vote for them. its free and it moves them up in the ranks, which lets them attract more advertisers AND more viewers/listeners... some of whom may buy stuff.
FREE: you can post links on your journal, and tell people about your favorite webcomic artists(and filkers, and other self employed entertainers, like, for instance, Tom Smith) because that helps them build up their customer base.
Money: you can donate funds (they usually have a virtual tip jar or guitar case) or you can buy one of their products, whether its T shirts, CDs, or prints.
i will be putting a hard link to this post, when i can, and also adding some links here:

| | cool beans!!! and i bet he would! psst, can you do me a favor? vote for ask dr eldritch. i figure when he gets back from the funeral and wedding we can surprise him with a bump in the ratings... I'd love to be able to buy the books from the Foglios. It's on my list of things to get once I've got a job again. QC has a really spiffy apron right now, too. ("Baking is science for hungry people") We do have all but the most recent of the OOTS books. You missed Looking For Group. ^_^ It's an excellent comic; very funny and well-drawn. http://www.lfgcomic.com/ |
